Ian Shields began studying drums & classical percussion in Indianapolis, Indiana when he was six years old, and first played professionally when he was thirteen.

In 1982, he won a scholarship for Outstanding Audition at the Indiana University School of Music, where he went on to study with professor George Gaber, and Associate Prof. Stuart Marrs.

Over his career, Mr Shields has built a reputation for creativity, excitement and versatility, spanning a vast breadth of musical genres, from Classical to Jazz to Rock to world music to show drumming, and whatever is in between.

In addition to his playing career, Mr Shields is a well-established teacher, for many years working as the Percussion coach for the orchestras of Youth Music Monterey, and lately as a drum instructor at Guitar Center Studios.
